For many years, books about the parks were relegated to souvenir books filled with glossy photos and phrases or technical volumes produced solely for the most dedicated of fans, but not books that could be appreciated by everyone, including those unfamiliar with Disney’s collection of theme parks.

For most of us, Walt Disney Imagineering is a Disney company creating wonders for Disney theme parks all around the world. But sometimes, it happens that WDI Imagineers create other wonders, and not for a Disney theme park. The Theme Building Encounter restaurant at Los Angeles airport is one of them.

Animal Kingdom is one of the four theme parks located within the Walt Disney World Resort. It is the newest park, opened in 1998, and the most different in terms of architecture, story and appeal. While it’s main focus is being a zoological park, it is more than that – offering story-driven ride attractions you’d find in the other theme parks, a couple of thrill rides and live shows of Broadway caliber.

When asked about my all-time favorite books about Disney, I have a hard time distilling that list to under ten titles. Included in my top ten: Disneyland, The Nickel Tour; Walt Disney's Imagineering; Disneyland Paris - From Sketch to Reality; Walt Disney's Railroad Story; and Michael Barrier's The Animated Man. Rounding out the list is the Gardens of the Walt Disney World Resort.

During my last visit to Disneyland, I spent close to an hour wandering around Mickey's House in Toontown. The details were amazing!

Fans of Imaginerding are used to the many book updates that I do, especially the new Disney-related titles. In this case, the Imagineers have added some special titles to Mickey's home library.

I am an urban planner and planning historian that has a thing for theme parks, amusement parks, and World’s Fairs. This intellectual curiosity lead to a book about Walt Disney’s interest in placemaking entitled Walt and the Promise of Progress City. As you will see, my focus is usually about the history and design of the North American Disney theme parks but I will stray now and again to check out other venues.
