Ever the forward thinker, Walt Disney felt that with the interstate highway system in its infancy, a ride that gave kids the wheel would be a great learning tool for the drivers of tomorrow. The original Autopia, located in Tomorrowland, opened with the Park in 1955 and featured four traffic lanes with no guide rails. The first several riders got a good taste of what it’s really like to drive on the Los Angeles area freeways. (Laugh!)

Disney Interactive Studios: Not Just for Movie Spinoffs
Disney Interactive Studios, the video game subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, has a roster of games filled with movie spinoffs. Cars, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story, and many others all have more than one game associated with the movie franchise. Let’s not focus on these, however. "Sponsored by Richfield (1955–1970), The Autopia was an exciting representation of the future of America’s highways. Cars without bumpers were almost completely destroyed by the test drivers, so bumpers were fitted around the vehicle; spring-loaded bumpers were eventually installed to discourage the all-too-tempting collisions by guests of all ages."

Midget Autopia, August 1959
Today we celebrate the Midget Autopia, aimed at satisfying the small fry who were too short to reach the pedals on the larger Autopia cars. In fact, it was for kids only; adults who attempted to ride were promptly executed.
